Quick answer
School holidays are some of the busiest domestic travel periods in New Zealand. In 2026 the main breaks are 3-19 April, 4-19 July, 26 September-11 October, and summer holidays from no later than 19 December.
Why the dates matter
Accommodation, campervans, ferries and popular family attractions book earlier during school holiday periods.
Traffic can be heavier around Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Queenstown, Christchurch and ferry terminals at the start and end of breaks.
If your itinerary is flexible, shift long drives away from the first Friday and final Sunday of a school holiday period.
What to book earlier
Book Interislander or Bluebridge ferry crossings early if your trip links the North and South Islands.
Reserve campervans and family rooms earlier for July, September and Christmas travel.
For glowworm caves, Hobbiton, Milford Sound cruises and ski areas, do not rely on same-day availability in peak weeks.
Term dates can vary
Schools have some flexibility around the start of Term 1 and the end of Term 4.
Private schools, early childhood services and local events may not match state school dates exactly.
Use the Ministry of Education dates for planning, then check local events for the exact region you will visit.
