Car and rooms or a campervan?

Use the same route, party and days to compare the costs that actually differ.

Keep the comparison matched

Open a complete itinerary’s budget and enter both sets of quotes for the same dates. Rooms are charged per room and night; camper sites may charge for a vehicle, people or extras, so convert the actual booking total into the shown per-vehicle-night allowance. Keep food days, road kilometres, people and activity tickets identical. Enter charged hire days separately: collecting after two city nights can reduce them, while late return fees can add a charged day. The calculator does not enforce berth or seat capacity; confirm that with the rental company.

Include the overlooked charges

Fuel uses litres per 100 km multiplied by the fuel price and number of vehicles. Enter ferry passengers separately from the quoted car or camper charge. Ask whether your rental may cross Cook Strait or requires a vehicle swap, then price that actual arrangement. Add one-way fees, insurance/excess reduction, parking, RUC where applicable, linen, campsite extras and airport transfers to the relevant scenario. A blank major line is a partial estimate. A contingency adds room for variation; it cannot replace an unknown ferry or accommodation bill. Neither vehicle type is inherently cheaper.
