Arrival and departure assumptions

Build a planning budget

NZD planning allowances, not quotes. Enter rates for your dates. Blank major costs make this a partial estimate. Adults 18+ only; child fares are not modelled. Accommodation nights and charged hire days are independent.

Add insurance/excess reduction, airport transfers, one-way fees, parking, road-user charges (RUC), campsite extras and other activities here. Enter 0 only after checking. Camper comparison assumes every night is a campsite night; mixed hotel nights need a separate quote.

Allow an additional contingency. The range below adds 10–20% to entered costs; it does not price missing items.

Day-by-day route

2,350 km · 32 h 50 min driving

Routed road estimates exclude traffic, rest, meals, activities, optional excursions and airport transfers. Allow extra time and check current road conditions.

Overnight bases

Day 1

Auckland

Overnight: Auckland

Recover from arrival, walk the waterfront and settle into central Auckland. Leave long driving until rested.

Stay advice for this base: Auckland

Auckland

Alternative: After a late arrival, keep this as a rest day near the airport.

Day 2

Auckland

Overnight: Auckland

Choose the Domain and museum or a harbour excursion. Waiheke needs a separate ferry ticket and enough time ashore; local and ferry travel are outside the road total.

Stay advice for this base: Auckland

Auckland

Alternative: In rough harbour conditions, stay with the city museums and sheltered central walks.

Day 3

Auckland → Waitomo

Overnight: Waitomo · 194 km · 2 h 30 min driving

Collect the car after resting from the flight, then drive to Waitomo. Book a timed cave visit that fits the drive. Overnight in Waitomo or nearby Ōtorohanga.

Stay advice for this base: Waitomo

Auckland ·

Alternative: After a late flight, stay in Auckland and shorten the following programme rather than drive tired.

Day 4

Waitomo → Hobbiton → Rotorua

Overnight: Rotorua · 178 km · 2 h 55 min driving

Stay advice for this base: Rotorua

Hobbiton Movie Set · Rotorua

Alternative: If Hobbiton is sold out, drive directly to Rotorua and keep the afternoon for the lakefront; do not arrive without a ticket expecting access.

Day 5

Rotorua

Overnight: Rotorua

Choose one booked geothermal or Māori cultural experience, then explore the lakefront. Keep clear of steaming ground outside marked paths.

Stay advice for this base: Rotorua

Rotorua

Alternative: For a quieter day, use the marked paths at Kuirau Park and the central lakefront instead of another paid excursion.

Day 6

Rotorua → Taupō

Overnight: Taupō · 81 km · 1 h 10 min driving

Drive to Taupō, use the signed Huka Falls viewpoints and keep the afternoon for the lake. This plan does not include the Tongariro Alpine Crossing; tomorrow is the long Wellington transfer, so keep this evening restful.

Stay advice for this base: Taupō

Rotorua ·

Alternative: If rain or fatigue limits the outing, keep a short lake visit and rest before the long Wellington transfer.

Open this day’s route
Day 7

Taupō → Wellington

Overnight: Wellington · 372 km · 5 h 5 min driving

Make this a transfer day to Wellington with meal and rest stops. Avoid adding a mountain hike before the drive; finish with a short waterfront walk.

Stay advice for this base: Wellington

Wellington

Alternative: If the drive is too long for your group, split it with another night en route and extend the trip.

Day 8

Wellington

Overnight: Wellington

A complete Wellington day for Te Papa and the waterfront. Check museum entry rules and allow meal time, then confirm tomorrow’s ferry terminal, check-in and rental-vehicle permission. Remain in Wellington tonight.

Stay advice for this base: Wellington

Wellington

Alternative: Shorten the local visit in poor weather. Follow current operator and road advice; do not add an unassessed mountain walk.

Day 9

Wellington → Picton

Overnight: Picton

Take the booked Cook Strait ferry to Picton. Allow about 3.5 hours sailing plus the operator’s check-in; Interislander vehicle check-in closes 60 minutes before departure. Confirm whether your rental permits taking the vehicle aboard or requires a swap.

Stay advice for this base: Picton

Wellington ·

Alternative: Keep a buffer for cancellation or delayed sailings; do not book a time-critical tour immediately after arrival.

Ferry: 3 h 30 min + 60 min vehicle check-in (Interislander; confirm your booking). Check-in information

Day 10

Picton → Kaikōura

Overnight: Kaikōura · 156 km · 2 h 10 min driving

Drive down the coast to Kaikōura. Choose a shoreline viewpoint; wildlife sightings and offshore trips depend on conditions and are not guaranteed.

Stay advice for this base: Kaikōura

Kaikōura

Alternative: If a sea trip is cancelled, keep the coast visit short and respect wildlife distances.

Day 11

Kaikōura

Overnight: Kaikōura

Keep the full day for a marine excursion only if the operator confirms it can run and your party meets its requirements. Otherwise choose a suitable peninsula section. Keep away from seals and nesting birds; follow DOC’s current access advice. Return to the same Kaikōura room.

Stay advice for this base: Kaikōura

Kaikōura

Alternative: Shorten the local visit in poor weather. Follow current operator and road advice; do not add an unassessed mountain walk.

Day 12

Kaikōura → Christchurch

Day 13

Christchurch → Lake Tekapo

Day 14

Lake Tekapo → Mount Cook

Overnight: Mount Cook · 105 km · 1 h 20 min driving

Follow Lake Pukaki to White Horse Hill. Choose the full Hooker Valley walk (10 km return, about 3 hours) only in suitable conditions. Stay in the Mount Cook area; car parking is paid.

Stay advice for this base: Mount Cook

Lake Tekapo · Aoraki / Mount Cook

Alternative: Turn at Mueller Lookout before the first bridge for a shorter walk; do not treat the whole track as wheelchair accessible.

Day 15

Mount Cook

Overnight: Mount Cook

Keep a complete park day for a walk suited to the current DOC notices and your ability. The full Hooker Valley walk is about 10 km return and three hours in suitable conditions; allow parking, rests and lunch separately. The second bridge opened in July 2026; obey current first-bridge capacity controls. Return to the same Mount Cook base.

Stay advice for this base: Mount Cook

Aoraki / Mount Cook

Alternative: Use Mueller Lookout before the first bridge for a shorter outing, or stay in the village when wind, ice or rain makes walking unsuitable. Check current notices even after bridge reopening.

Day 16

Mount Cook → Wānaka

Overnight: Wānaka · 208 km · 2 h 45 min driving

Drive via Twizel and the Lindis Pass to Wānaka, allowing a rest stop and time for the lakefront. Check the pass road report in winter.

Stay advice for this base: Wānaka

Aoraki / Mount Cook · Wānaka

Alternative: In poor alpine weather, skip roadside walks and use the Wānaka lakefront after arrival.

Open this day’s route
Day 17

Wānaka → Queenstown → Te Anau

Overnight: Te Anau · 241 km · 3 h 35 min driving

Transfer via Queenstown to Te Anau, with a food and rest stop. The road total includes both legs; Queenstown is a pass-through today, not another activity day. Buy fuel and supplies and confirm the Milford booking for tomorrow.

Stay advice for this base: Te Anau

Alternative: Shorten the local visit in poor weather. Follow current operator and road advice; do not add an unassessed mountain walk.
