Arrival and departure assumptions

Arrive Christchurch day 1, depart Queenstown day 14. Thirteen nights, including two arrival nights and three Te Anau nights. Collect the car for day 3; budget hire days are editable. Self-drive sightseeing, not a winter or alpine-hiking assessment. One-way rental permission and airport transfers need separate checks.

Build a planning budget

NZD planning allowances, not quotes. Enter rates for your dates. Blank major costs make this a partial estimate. Adults 18+ only; child fares are not modelled. Accommodation nights and charged hire days are independent.

Add insurance/excess reduction, airport transfers, one-way fees, parking, road-user charges (RUC), campsite extras and other activities here. Enter 0 only after checking. Camper comparison assumes every night is a campsite night; mixed hotel nights need a separate quote.

Allow an additional contingency. The range below adds 10–20% to entered costs; it does not price missing items.

Day-by-day route

Routed road estimates exclude traffic, rest, meals, activities, optional excursions and airport transfers. Allow extra time and check current road conditions.

Overnight bases

Christchurch

Alternative: Shorten the local visit in poor weather. Follow current operator and road advice; do not add an unassessed mountain walk.

Day 2

Christchurch

Overnight: Christchurch

Day 4

Day 5

Mount Cook

Overnight: Mount Cook

Keep a complete park day for a walk suited to the current DOC notices and your ability. The full Hooker Valley walk is about 10 km return and three hours in suitable conditions; allow parking, rests and lunch separately. The second bridge opened in July 2026; obey current first-bridge capacity controls. Return to the same Mount Cook base.

Stay advice for this base: Mount Cook

Aoraki / Mount Cook

Alternative: Use Mueller Lookout before the first bridge for a shorter outing, or stay in the village when wind, ice or rain makes walking unsuitable. Check current notices even after bridge reopening.

Day 6

Mount Cook → Wānaka

Overnight: Wānaka · 208 km · 2 h 45 min driving

Drive via Twizel and the Lindis Pass to Wānaka, allowing a rest stop and time for the lakefront. Check the pass road report in winter.

Aoraki / Mount Cook · Wānaka

Alternative: In poor alpine weather, skip roadside walks and use the Wānaka lakefront after arrival.

Day 7

Wānaka

Overnight: Wānaka

A full Wānaka day without a required transfer. Choose a lakefront visit or one suitable booked activity, leaving lunch and weather time free. Roys Peak is not included: it closes 1 October–10 November, and its exposed climb needs a separate fitness and weather decision.

Stay advice for this base: Wānaka

Wānaka

Alternative: Shorten the local visit in poor weather. Follow current operator and road advice; do not add an unassessed mountain walk.

Day 8

Wānaka → Queenstown → Te Anau

Overnight: Te Anau · 241 km · 3 h 35 min driving

Transfer via Queenstown to Te Anau, with a food and rest stop. The road total includes both legs; Queenstown is a pass-through today, not another activity day. Buy fuel and supplies and confirm the Milford booking for tomorrow.

Stay advice for this base: Te Anau

Overnight: Te Anau · 237 km · 3 h 20 min driving

Day 10

Te Anau

Overnight: Te Anau

Stay advice for this base: Te Anau

Te Anau
