Different journeys, separate days
Choose Milford if you want to stop along Milford Road or buy a cruise after arranging your own road transport. Choose RealNZ’s Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise if a remote-water journey appeals more than roadside viewpoints. It starts at Manapouri, crosses Lake Manapouri, continues by coach over Wilmot Pass and then cruises the fiord before reversing the transfers. You cannot drive your rental car through to the Doubtful cruise. Allow a full day plus your journey to Manapouri; confirm the total duration of the actual departure.
Conditions and access decide the choice
Te Anau is a useful base for either fiord; Manapouri is the departure point for Doubtful, not Milford. Doubtful includes multiple boarding stages and a coach transfer, so ask about your specific mobility needs before paying. On Milford trips, ask for the exact vessel and toilet arrangements rather than a general “accessible” promise. Rain can add waterfalls but does not guarantee safe roads, sailing or flying. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. If both trips cancel, keep a local Te Anau day and rearrange bookings only after operator advice.
