Te Anau

Two or three nights in Te Anau make space for Milford Road and a local or reserve day.

Choose your priorities

Prioritise one fiord day. In town, start at the DOC visitor centre and follow the lakefront towards the bird sanctuary. Manapouri is the separate departure point for Doubtful Sound.

A practical visit plan

Arrive and buy supplies the afternoon before Milford. Keep the next day for the road and cruise, returning to the same room. Use a third day for local walks or a separately reserved Doubtful trip, rather than another long transfer.

Where to stay

A compact base for Milford Road, with enough time for a change of weather.

Weather alternatives

Ask at the visitor centre about current local conditions. Stay near town if Milford Road closes; do not assume a different fiord operates in the same weather.

Physical access

DOC lists the visitor-centre to Kepler car park walk as 3.5 km one way, about 50 minutes. This is a walking time, not a wheelchair-access guarantee; turn back earlier for a shorter outing.
