Village for park time; towns for supplies
Mount Cook Village minimises the return drive when the national park is your priority. Buy groceries before arriving: the Hermitage confirms there is no village grocery shop. Twizel is a useful supply and overnight alternative on the Mackenzie Basin route, but every park visit adds a return road journey. Tekapo suits a lake evening and the onward Christchurch route; it is not a substitute for a night beside the park if you want an early walk. Check the actual door-to-trail drive before choosing on price alone.
Two verified options, different facilities
Hermitage Hotel is an option for a hotel-and-restaurant stay in the upper village. Do not assume a kitchen or a mountain-view room: confirm the category. Mt Cook Motels, in the lower village about 800 m from the hotel, offers kitchens and parking, but the operator says these units do not have Aoraki views. Self-catering and a view are separate decisions. Confirm access to the exact room or unit. Reserve two park nights if a weather alternative matters; check DOC’s live track notices before committing to a walk.
