Wānaka

Two nights in Wānaka separate lake time from the next transfer.

Choose your priorities

Use the lakefront for a short first visit. Roys Peak is a substantial exposed hike, not a brief roadside lookout, and DOC closes the track for lambing from 1 October to 10 November. It is closed on this release’s check date.

A practical visit plan

Arrive from Aoraki, settle in and walk a short lake section. Keep the next full day for a suitable activity selected for weather and ability. Transfer to Te Anau on another day; do not add a full mountain hike to that drive.

Where to stay

Central Wānaka suits meals on foot; outlying apartments can offer kitchens and parking but need a real transport plan. Check the walk back from the lake and parking at your unit.

Weather alternatives

Choose a shorter lakeside outing or an indoor town visit when cloud, wind or snow makes a high route unsuitable. Never treat a closure as optional.

Physical access

Roys Peak has steep climbing and exposed terrain; it is not a step-free option. For a lower-effort visit, confirm the exact lakefront section, surface and toilet location locally.
