Waikato

The Waikato is green dairy country south of Auckland, named after the longest river in New Zealand, which runs through it. Most travellers pass through on the way south, but the region has two of the country's headline attractions: the Hobbiton movie set near Matamata and the glowworm caves at Waitomo. On the west coast, the surf town of Raglan has a relaxed, alternative feel.

What to see

Hobbiton, the Shire set from the films, sits on a working sheep farm near Matamata and can only be seen on a guided tour, which you must book ahead. The Waitomo Caves are a network of limestone caverns lit by glowworms, with options from a simple walk to black-water rafting. Raglan on the coast has one of the longest left-hand surf breaks in the world.

  • Waitomo glowworm caves
  • Raglan for surf and a laid-back town
  • Hamilton Gardens, a free and genuinely good city garden

Getting around

A car is easiest. Hamilton is about 1.5 hours south of Auckland, Matamata around 2 hours, and Waitomo about 2.5 hours. Raglan is 45 minutes west of Hamilton on a winding road. The region is compact enough that you can base yourself in Hamilton or Matamata and reach the main sights on day trips.

When to go

The Waikato is mild and green year round, and the indoor caves at Waitomo work in any weather. Summer is best for Raglan and the coast. Hobbiton runs all year, but tours fill quickly in summer and over weekends, so book in advance. The countryside is at its greenest in spring after the winter rain.

Honest notes

Hobbiton is fun but firmly a paid, ticketed experience, and adult tickets run around NZ$120, so it suits film fans more than casual passers by. Waitomo can get busy with tour buses around the middle of the day, so an early or late slot is quieter. Raglan's surf is for the experienced; beginners should take a lesson rather than head out alone.

Costs and practical tips

The two big sights both cost money: a Waitomo glowworm cave tour is around NZ$60 and up depending on the cave and any rafting add-on, on top of the Hobbiton ticket. Book both online ahead in summer, as walk up spots are limited. Free alternatives in the region include the Hamilton Gardens, the Bridal Veil Falls near Raglan, and the riverside walks in Hamilton along the Waikato River.

  • The Bridal Veil Falls drop is a short, easy walk from the car park near Raglan
  • Te Aroha has free hot mineral pools and a soda spring
  • Hamilton has the main supermarkets and services if you are stocking up

How long to stay

Most people see the Waikato in a day or two on the way between Auckland and Rotorua, pairing Hobbiton near Matamata with the Waitomo caves, which are about an hour apart. If you want the surf and the slower coast, add a night in Raglan. The region works well as a set of day trips from a single base rather than a long stay.

Good to know

The Waikato sits right on the main highway south of Auckland, so it is easy to reach and easy to combine with onward travel. A car is the practical way to link the sights, as buses between Matamata, Waitomo and Raglan are limited. The glowworm caves stay cool, so take a layer underground even in summer. Tap water is safe, cards are taken everywhere, and Hamilton has full services if you need them.
