What to see
Hobbiton, the Shire set from the films, sits on a working sheep farm near Matamata and can only be seen on a guided tour, which you must book ahead. The Waitomo Caves are a network of limestone caverns lit by glowworms, with options from a simple walk to black-water rafting. Raglan on the coast has one of the longest left-hand surf breaks in the world.
- Hobbiton movie set near Matamata, tours only
- Waitomo glowworm caves
- Raglan for surf and a laid-back town
- Hamilton Gardens’ themed enclosures, with paid visitor admission or an eligible resident pass.
Getting around
A car is easiest. Hamilton is about 1.5 hours south of Auckland, Matamata around 2 hours, and Waitomo about 2.5 hours. Raglan is 45 minutes west of Hamilton on a winding road. The region is compact enough that you can base yourself in Hamilton or Matamata and reach the main sights on day trips.
When to go
The Waikato is mild and green year round, and the indoor caves at Waitomo work in any weather. Summer is best for Raglan and the coast. Hobbiton runs all year, but tours fill quickly in summer and over weekends, so book in advance. The countryside is at its greenest in spring after the winter rain.
Honest notes
The Signature tour departing from The Shire’s Rest takes about 2.5 hours including coach transfers, with a Bagshot Row interior visit and a drink at the Green Dragon Inn. Until 31 March 2028, adults (18+) pay NZ$130, ages 11–17 NZ$65, and ages 0–10 need an allocated free ticket with a paying adult. Check in at least 20 minutes before departure. The separate Matamata Information Centre departure takes about 3.5 hours; do not confuse its transfer with the farm departure.
Costs and practical tips
Hamilton Gardens’ Enclosed Gardens cost NZ$27.5 per adult without a resident pass from 1 October 2026. Children under 16 enter free but need a ticket. Eligible residents can apply for a free pass with proof of residency; the wider park has separate free areas. For Waitomo, compare the particular cave or rafting product. Free alternatives include Hamilton’s river paths and Bridal Veil Falls near Raglan.
- The Bridal Veil Falls drop is a short, easy walk from the car park near Raglan
- Te Aroha Domain’s foot pool is free; Te Aroha Mineral Spas is a separate paid bathing experience.
- Hamilton has the main supermarkets and services if you are stocking up
How long to stay
Most people see the Waikato in a day or two on the way between Auckland and Rotorua, pairing Hobbiton near Matamata with the Waitomo caves, which are about an hour apart. If you want the surf and the slower coast, add a night in Raglan. The region works well as a set of day trips from a single base rather than a long stay.
Good to know
The Waikato sits right on the main highway south of Auckland, so it is easy to reach and easy to combine with onward travel. A car is the practical way to link the sights, as buses between Matamata, Waitomo and Raglan are limited. The glowworm caves stay cool, so take a layer underground even in summer. Tap water is safe, cards are taken everywhere, and Hamilton has full services if you need them.
